Everything that goes into our compost comes from our farm. That way I know what is in it. Most commercial compost is from scraps that are brought in. Some could have herbicide or pesticides sprayed on them. While its great they are being composted it could be contaminated and ruin your plants growth. I use a pitchfork while most commercial farms use big machinery. These big machines could kill a lot of the beneficial insects that you want in your compost. Our compost is put into a big pile and is heated up to 140 degrees Fahrenheit which will kill most weed seeds. I will turn it with my pitchfork every couple of weeks. After about 4 months it will cool down and then it will start its curing stage. After 2 months of curing, I will then sift it thru my 1/4" screen. After that it is ready to be spread around plants or even used to plant your plants in. Some say you shouldn't plant in 100% compost, but I disagree, and my pepper plants will back me up.
